Why Do Cats Purr?

A 2023 study upended a 50-year-old theory about how cats produce that rumble — and purring may do more than signal contentment.

A purring cat seems like the simplest thing in the world to explain: it’s happy. But researchers who actually study the sound have found something stranger — cats purr when they’re injured, giving birth, and even dying, not just when they’re curled up in a lap. The mechanism behind that rumble turns out to be just as surprising as the reasons behind it.

The Mechanism Puzzled Scientists for Decades

For roughly 50 years, the standard explanation was that a cat’s brain sends rapid-fire signals to the laryngeal muscles, contracting and relaxing them up to 30 times per second to produce the sound on both the inhale and exhale. That theory was overturned in a 2023 study published in Current Biology. Christian Herbst, a voice scientist at the University of Vienna, and colleagues examined larynges from cats and found that cats have small, dense “pads” of tissue embedded in their vocal folds. By pushing warm air through the isolated larynges, the team showed the tissue pads alone were enough to produce purring frequencies, without any ongoing nerve signal driving each vibration. The brain likely just triggers the process; after that, the physics of airflow across those pads takes over — a phenomenon called flow-induced self-sustained oscillation.

The Pads Solve a Size Problem

Those tissue pads matter because of basic acoustics: producing a low-pitched sound normally requires long, heavy vocal structures, which is why large animals have deep voices and small ones have high-pitched ones. A domestic cat, weighing in at just a few kilograms, has no business producing a sound as low as 25 to 30 Hertz. The added mass in the vocal fold pads appears to let a small cat’s larynx vibrate slowly enough to generate that bass-level rumble, according to the study’s findings reported by the Smithsonian.

Purring Isn’t Only About Contentment

The behavioral picture is more complicated than “happy cat noise.” Cats purr while nursing kittens, while being petted, but also during veterinary visits, while recovering from injury, and in other stressful situations, according to Scientific American. Newborn kittens can’t see or hear well, so a mother’s purr is thought to help guide them to her side to nurse. In adult cats, purring in stressful or painful contexts has led some researchers to treat it less as a pure signal of pleasure and more as a form of self-soothing or communication that spans multiple emotional states.

A Possible Self-Healing Frequency

One of the more intriguing hypotheses is that a cat’s purr, sitting in the 25-to-150 Hertz range, overlaps with frequencies that have been shown in other research to support bone density and tissue repair. That has led some scientists to speculate that purring could function as a kind of low-grade physical therapy a cat administers to itself — plausible given that cats spend so much of their day resting and would benefit from a way to offset the muscle and bone loss that comes with prolonged inactivity, according to Scientific American. It’s a compelling idea, though it remains a hypothesis rather than settled science, and researchers caution that more direct evidence in living animals is still needed.

Not Every Cat Purrs the Same Way

Purring isn’t unique to house cats. Most small felid species produce a similar sound, though the biggest cats — lions and tigers — cannot purr continuously the way a domestic cat does, a difference tied to variations in their throat anatomy. That a trait this specific shows up across so much of the cat family suggests it evolved because it served a real purpose, whether as a bonding signal between mother and kittens, a way to solicit care, or, quite possibly, a built-in recovery tool.
