Wi-Fi feels like magic — open a laptop anywhere in the house and the internet is just there, no cable in sight. The mechanism behind it, though, is not much different from a walkie-talkie: it is radio, tuned to frequencies too high for any radio dial, carrying data instead of voices.
It Starts With a Wire, Ends With a Wave
Your internet connection still arrives at your house the old-fashioned way, over a physical cable from your provider. What a router does is take that wired signal and convert it into radio waves — specifically, it turns your data into a stream of ones and zeros, then encodes that stream as a digital radio wave broadcast from its antennas. Your phone or laptop has a matching radio inside it that picks up that wave and decodes it back into data, and sends its own replies the same way in reverse.
Two Frequency Bands, Two Trade-Offs
Most routers broadcast on two frequency bands at once: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (many newer routers add a third, 6 GHz). These are far higher frequencies than AM or FM radio, which is exactly why they can carry so much more data. The trade-off is range versus speed. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther and passes through walls more easily — often 150 feet or more indoors — but carries less data at once. The 5 GHz band is faster but its shorter, more compressed waves cover roughly half the distance and lose strength faster through walls and floors.
How Your Device Actually Joins the Network
Connecting to Wi-Fi is a small negotiation, not an instant handshake. Your device sends out a probe request looking for nearby networks; the router answers back with its network name and address; your device requests to join; and the two run through an encrypted exchange — often called a four-way handshake — before your device is assigned its own address on the network. All of this typically happens in under a second, which is why it feels instant.
Why Every Device Does Not Talk Over Each Other
A household full of phones, laptops, speakers and doorbells all sharing one radio channel sounds like it should be chaos. It mostly is not, because every Wi-Fi device follows the same shared rulebook, the 802.11 standards, and a fairly polite protocol: listen first, and only transmit when the channel sounds clear. If two devices happen to transmit at the same moment, both back off for a small, randomized amount of time before trying again. It is less a conversation than a room full of people taking quick turns.
What Actually Kills Your Wi-Fi Speed
Distance from the router is the obvious culprit, but it is rarely the only one. Thick walls, metal filing cabinets, large mirrors and even fish tanks can absorb or deflect radio waves. Neighboring Wi-Fi networks on the same channel compete for the same airspace, which is why apartment buildings tend to have messier Wi-Fi than houses. The fix for most of this is unglamorous: put the router somewhere central and elevated, out in the open rather than tucked in a cabinet, and away from thick walls and large appliances.
