A new global map shows, for the first time, precisely which of the world’s coral reefs have a genuine chance of surviving the climate crisis. Which reefs, exactly, turns out to matter more than how many.
Coral reefs cover less than a tenth of one percent of the ocean floor, yet an estimated 25 percent of all marine species live in, on, or around them, and roughly a billion people benefit directly or indirectly from what reefs provide, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For most of the past decade, the conversation about their future has run on two competing instincts: alarm, because roughly half the world’s coral has already been lost to warming seas, and fatigue, because “the reefs are dying” has been the headline so often it stopped moving anyone. In June 2026, a study from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Macquarie University tried to replace both instincts with something more specific: a map.
Working with the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative, the researchers identified more than 165,000 square kilometers of reef across 71 countries and territories that show measurable resilience to climate stress — reefs whose temperature history, water circulation, and species composition give them a real statistical chance of enduring warmer oceans, not just surviving the next heatwave. The map is roughly ten thousand times more detailed than the previous benchmark, a 2018 assessment known as “50 Reefs,” and triples the total area of reef considered climate-resilient.
“Coral reefs are often framed as ecosystems beyond saving,” said Dr. Emily Darling of WCS, one of the study’s authors, “but this research shows that there is a global set of reefs that have the potential to survive and recover from the climate crisis.”
The map’s more striking finding is about concentration, not just quantity. More than half of the identified resilient reef sits in just five places: Australia, the Bahamas, Cuba, Indonesia, and the Philippines. “That creates an extraordinary opportunity for governments,” said WCS’s Dr. Stacy Jupiter — a relatively small number of national conservation budgets, spent well, could protect a disproportionate share of the reef likely to still exist in 2075. Only about 28 percent of the newly mapped resilient area currently sits inside any protected zone; more than 119,000 square kilometers of a reef’s best chance at survival has no formal protection at all.
What “resilient” looks like on the ground
The Bahamas is one of those five countries, and on the island of Eleuthera, a small piece of what “spending well” looks like has already been running for five years.
The Bahamas Coral Innovation Hub, based at The Island School’s Cape Eleuthera Institute, has spent since January 2021 doing something coral restoration rarely gets credit for: training people, not just planting coral. A case study published in August 2026 in Frontiers in Ocean Sustainability, led by researcher Natalia Hurtado Lopez, documented 482 Bahamians who passed through the Hub’s programs, 171 of whom became certified PADI divers and 59 of whom went on to join the wider Reef Rescue Network, the regional restoration effort the Hub feeds into. Hurtado, the Hub’s lead scientist, has spent much of that time on the unglamorous basics of restoration — teaching people to clear algae and sediment from coral nurseries by hand.
Zoomed out to the full Reef Rescue Network — now operating at nearly 30 sites across the Bahamas, Aruba, and St. Lucia through more than 20 partner organizations — the numbers get larger: over 80 Bahamians trained as Reef Rescue Divers, more than 70 as instructors, close to 8,000 corals growing in ocean nurseries, and over 2,000 already transplanted onto degraded reefs, according to the Perry Institute for Marine Science, which coordinates the network. The Bahamian Ministry of Tourism has begun promoting reef-restoration dives to visitors, a small but telling sign that a conservation program and a tourism economy hit hard by pandemic-era travel restrictions can be made to serve each other, in a country where a single square kilometer of healthy reef has been valued at up to $135 million. Even that modest a budget has been precarious: the network has reported more than $1 million in foreign investment held up by permitting delays, a reminder that the limiting factor in reef restoration is often bureaucratic as much as biological.
The argument restoration still has to win
Restoration’s critics have a real point, and it’s worth stating plainly: no amount of coral planting reverses ocean warming, and a nursery of a few thousand fragments cannot substitute for cutting emissions. A prominent line of criticism has called large-scale restoration “an expensive distraction” from that harder work.
A 2024 paper in npj Ocean Sustainability, led by David Suggett of the KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative with twelve co-authors, took that critique on directly and argued it rests on a category error. Most of the evidence used to dismiss restoration, the authors found, comes from small-scale scientific experiments testing individual techniques, not from ecological restoration projects operating at the scale the Bahamas network now runs at; more than two-thirds of feasibility reviews drew on the former while claiming to evaluate the latter. Evaluated on its own terms, restoration can measurably rebuild reef cover, structural complexity, and species diversity, the paper concluded — not as a replacement for emissions cuts, but as a genuine management tool, particularly for emergency intervention after storms.
Put the two studies together and a sharper, more answerable question emerges than “can reefs be saved”: not whether restoration works in general, but whether it’s being aimed at the reefs statistically most likely to make it, and whether the people doing the work are the ones who will still be living beside that reef in twenty years. On that second question, at least, Eleuthera looks like an answer already in progress — and, with the world’s protection gap still covering some 119,000 square kilometers of the reef most worth saving, one that a lot more of the five-country list will need to start writing for themselves.
