For centuries, people have asked why one person eagerly enters a crowded room while another prefers a quiet evening at home. Is personality inherited, learned, or consciously built? A genetic study drawing on more than a million participants offers the most precise answer yet — and it is not the answer either camp wanted.
The central idea
Psychologists commonly describe personality using five broad dimensions: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism — the last being the tendency to experience anxiety and other negative emotions. Together they are known as the Big Five, and they have anchored personality research for roughly four decades, and they underpin much of what workplaces now call emotional intelligence.
Researchers working under the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium compared participants’ answers on standard personality questionnaires with their genomic data. The analysis, led by Michel Nivard of the University of Bristol and published in Nature on 2 September 2026, drew on 46 separate cohorts and between 611,000 and 1.14 million people depending on the trait being measured.
They identified roughly 1,260 common genetic variants associated with these traits — more than 800 of them never previously reported. For conscientiousness, the count rose from three known variants to 131. For neuroticism, it rose from 224 to 706.
But there was no single gene for extraversion, conscientiousness, or any other personality dimension. Instead, very many variants each appear to make an extremely small contribution.
“Several decades of studies have seen failures because they [have been] looking for one or a few genes,” Denis Bratko of the University of Zagreb told TIME. His colleague Tena Vukasović Hlupić put it more bluntly: the work is “finally empirical evidence that there is not one gene for whatever personality trait.”
What the 13% figure means
The researchers found that genetic profiles could predict only a modest proportion of personality differences — up to about 13%, with estimates ranging roughly between 5% and 16% depending on the trait and the analytical method used.
This does not mean that 13% of an individual’s personality is permanently encoded in their DNA. It means that, within the populations studied, genetic information explained a limited portion of the observed variation in personality scores across a very large group of people. It is a statement about a population, not a verdict on a person.
The larger message is therefore not genetic destiny, but genetic influence.
Genes may create inclinations, sensitivities, or starting conditions. Family relationships, culture, education, opportunity, adversity, friendship, and personal decision continue shaping — much as holding power reshapes how people behave — how those tendencies are actually expressed.
Notably, the genetic signals held up even after the researchers accounted for shared family background, which suggests the associations are not simply an artefact of siblings growing up in the same household.
Personality and everyday life
The study also identified associations between personality-linked genetic profiles and certain life patterns. Profiles connected with extraversion were associated with a greater likelihood of contracting COVID-19 early in the pandemic — possibly because highly social people sought out more interaction. Profiles linked to conscientiousness tracked with lower smoking risk.
Other associations appeared between personality profiles and where people lived: those with variants tied to openness were more likely to be found in cosmopolitan cities, while higher neuroticism scores skewed toward affluent suburbs.
Such findings should be read carefully. Association does not establish inevitability, and it does not demonstrate that genes directly caused any particular decision — the distinction between correlation and causation that sits at the heart of the scientific method. A genetic profile that correlates with living in a city is not a gene that moves you there.
Why the research matters
Personality influences health-related behavior. It can affect whether people seek medical help, follow treatment plans, or become vulnerable to particular mental-health difficulties. Understanding its biological foundations may eventually sharpen research into prevention and early intervention.
Yet genetic information is not currently a superior tool for discovering who someone is — a point the researchers themselves press hard. There is, they concluded, little value in trying to predict an individual’s personality from their genetic makeup.
“There is no better way to know about your personality than to take a personality test,” said Nivard.
One further limit deserves emphasis. Samples of this kind draw disproportionately on participants of European ancestry, and the people who volunteer for research are themselves a selected group — the study found that agreeableness and openness were associated with study participation. How far these findings extend to the rest of the world remains an open question.

Our genes may quietly influence the opening lines of our personal story, but they do not complete the manuscript. Environment supplies the setting, experience develops the plot, and our choices help determine what happens next.
Personality is neither entirely inherited nor infinitely flexible. It is a living relationship between what biology gives us and what life teaches us to become.
