Why Do Leaves Change Color in Autumn?

Fall colors were never a new pigment appearing — they were there all summer, hidden under green. Here is the chemistry behind autumn's reds, oranges and golds.

Every autumn, the same question resurfaces along with the color: how does a tree know to turn its leaves red, orange and gold, seemingly overnight? The answer is not overnight at all — it is a slow unmasking. Those colors were in the leaf the whole summer. Green was just loud enough to hide them.

Green Was Always a Disguise

Through spring and summer, leaves are packed with chlorophyll, the pigment that captures sunlight and turns it into the sugars a tree lives on. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light and reflects green, which is why healthy leaves look green to us. But chlorophyll is not the only pigment in a leaf — it is just the dominant one, constantly being produced and broken down all summer long, its green covering up whatever else is underneath.

Shorter Days Trigger the Shutdown

As daylight hours shrink in fall, trees respond by winding down chlorophyll production. Cooler temperatures reinforce the signal. Without fresh chlorophyll being made to replace what naturally breaks down, the green fades — and for the first time all year, the pigments that were there all along get to show through.

Two Pigments, Two Different Stories

Yellows and oranges come from carotenoids, pigments that play a minor supporting role in photosynthesis and are present in the leaf from the start, simply masked by chlorophyll until it clears. Reds and purples are a different story: anthocyanins are not sitting there waiting. They are actively produced in autumn, when sugars get trapped in the leaf as its connection to the branch starts closing off, reacting with sunlight to create the pigment fresh. That is one reason red colors can vary so much year to year — they depend on the specific weather conditions of that particular fall, not just the tree’s genetics.

Why Some Years Are More Brilliant Than Others

The most vivid displays come from a specific combination: warm, sunny days paired with cool nights that stay above freezing. That combination lets leaves keep making sugar during the day while slowing its escape from the leaf at night, which favors strong anthocyanin production. A drought dulls the show; an early hard freeze can kill color production before it gets going; a mild, wet fall can just delay everything. The color of any given autumn is really a running record of that season’s weather.

Why the Leaves Fall At All

The color change and the leaf drop are part of the same survival strategy. Once the ground freezes, a tree’s roots can no longer pull up water, and a leaf covered in thin, exposed surface area is a liability — it loses moisture and can be damaged by snow load. Trees seal off each leaf at its stem with a layer of cells called the abscission layer, cutting it loose before winter arrives, then enter a kind of dormancy until the following spring restarts the whole cycle.
