Why Do We Yawn?

Scientists still debate the exact reason, but brain cooling, alertness, and social contagion all play a role.

You’re reading this and, statistically, you might be about to yawn. It’s one of the strangest reflexes we have: automatic, universal across vertebrates, and — despite decades of study — still not fully explained by a single theory. Here’s what scientists actually know.

It’s Not Really About Oxygen

The old idea that yawning is your body’s way of gulping extra oxygen when carbon dioxide builds up in the blood has been tested directly and doesn’t hold up. Researchers who had subjects breathe air with elevated CO2 or reduced oxygen found it didn’t change how often they yawned. That result pushed scientists to look elsewhere for an explanation.

The Leading Theory: Cooling the Brain

The dominant hypothesis today is thermoregulatory: yawning helps cool the brain. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the deep inhale of a yawn pulls a large volume of air into the lungs, which cools blood flowing through vessels in the head and neck, while the stretch of facial muscles and the tears it produces add to the heat loss. Researcher Andrew Gallup, who has studied the phenomenon extensively, found that people yawn more often when ambient temperature is close to body temperature — conditions where the brain most needs a cooling assist — and less in extreme heat or cold, when yawning would not help or could even backfire.

It’s Also an Alertness Switch

Yawning tends to cluster around transitions — waking up, getting drowsy, or shifting from one activity to another. One theory holds that yawning stimulates the carotid artery, temporarily raising heart rate and nudging the brain toward a more alert state, functioning as a kind of built-in wake-up nudge. On average, a person yawns about 20 times a day, according to the Cleveland Clinic, and a sudden, persistent increase over that personal baseline can be a symptom worth mentioning to a doctor, since it has been linked to conditions such as migraines, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.

Why Yawns Spread Through a Room

Contagious yawning is real, not just a saying. In video experiments, roughly 40 to 60 percent of participants yawn after watching someone else do it, a pattern researchers tie to mirror neurons — brain cells that fire both when we perform an action and when we watch someone else perform it. The effect is strongest between people who know each other well: a 2013 study found dogs yawned more after watching their owners yawn than after watching a stranger. Gallup, of Johns Hopkins University, has proposed that this contagion evolved as a group-vigilance signal, synchronizing alertness across a group of animals that shared the same environmental risks. Oddly, susceptibility to contagious yawning appears to run lower in people who score higher on measures of psychopathic traits, though its broader link to empathy is still debated among researchers.

An Old Reflex, Still Not Fully Solved

What makes yawning a genuinely interesting case study is how ordinary and yet how stubbornly mysterious it is. It shows up in nearly every vertebrate studied, from fish to birds to primates, it can be triggered just by reading about it, and no single theory — cooling, alertness, or social signaling — accounts for all of it on its own. Most researchers now think it’s some combination of the three, a reflex doing more than one job at once.
