Twelve is an odd number to build a calendar around. The moon takes about 29.5 days to cycle through its phases, and the Earth takes about 365.25 days to circle the sun, and neither of those numbers divides neatly into twelve equal chunks. The real answer to why we have 12 months has less to do with clean math and more to do with a messy, centuries-long argument between the moon, the sun, and Roman politicians.
Rome Started With Just 10 Months
The earliest Roman calendar, traditionally credited to the city’s legendary founder Romulus, had only 10 months and just 304 days, running from March through December. The remaining roughly 61 days of winter were not assigned to any month at all. They simply were not tracked, since there was little for farmers or soldiers to do until spring planting began again.
Two Kings Add Winter Back In
According to Roman tradition, the city’s second king, Numa Pompilius, filled that winter gap by adding two new months, January and February, bringing the year to 12 months and about 355 days, deliberately kept close to a lunar cycle count. Because 355 days still drifted out of sync with the actual solar year, Roman priests periodically inserted an extra leap month called Mercedinus after February. In practice, the priests in charge of this insertion, who were also politicians, sometimes lengthened or shortened the calendar to extend allies’ terms in office or cut short a rival’s, and by the first century B.C. the Roman calendar was a mess, off from the actual seasons by roughly two to three months.
Caesar Cuts the Moon Loose
Julius Caesar decided to fix the problem for good. Working with the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes, he abandoned the lunar system entirely in favor of the Egyptian model, a calendar tied purely to the solar year of about 365.25 days. To realign the calendar with the actual seasons, 46 B.C. was stretched to 445 days, a period Romans later called “the last year of confusion.” Starting January 1, 45 B.C., the new Julian calendar kept the existing 12 months and their names, added a leap day every fourth year, and cut the moon out of the equation altogether, even though the month names themselves stayed lunar in origin.
Twelve Stuck Because It Was Already Familiar
Caesar could have redesigned the calendar from scratch, with any number of months he liked. Instead he kept 12, because that structure, and the associated religious festivals, market days, and civic calendar, was already deeply embedded in Roman life. The Julian calendar, and its more precisely corrected successor, the Gregorian calendar introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, simply adjusted the length of the year and the placement of leap days rather than reinventing the month altogether.
An Accident of History, Not Astronomy
There is no law of physics that requires 12 months. A calendar could just as easily run on 10, 13, or any other number, and various reform proposals over the centuries have suggested exactly that. What survived is largely an accident of Roman political and religious tradition, patched repeatedly to keep pace with the sun, and inherited by the rest of the world through the spread of the Roman and later Christian calendar.
